Pool Deck Renovation – Replacing a Chipping Kool Deck

On the flip side, there are many products that you can purchase “over the counter” at places like Lowes & Home Depot. Many of these “off brands” will give you an installation guide which makes the buyer feel empowered and capable of doing it themselves.
Unfortunately, most home owners quickly discover that applying floor coatings by themselves is harder than it appears. Problems often arise within a time period of a few months to a few years. Flaking, Chipping or De-laminating are the most common issues that we see in the field.
Manufacturers of these off-brand products do not provide their clients with a warranty. They can hind behind the mask of “not professionally installed.” This leaves the home owner holding the bill – with wasted product and a surface that is difficult to remove. It’s a frustrating circumstance and one that we see too often in our industry.
Removing an Old & Chipping Kool Deck Coating
This week, our teams removed a Chipping Kool Deck system from a back patio / pool deck. This home owner contacted us after they began to experience the same issues listed above. It’s applied correctly, Kool Deck is a wonderful product that provides many benefits to clients. For starters, it helps to cool the patio surface – which in Texas is a very nice benefit!
However, like all products, if they are not installed correctly (or if the product naturally starts to fail) they no longer become viable. Our client contacted us and requested for us to remove this Kool Deck system and install our 1 Day Coatings product instead. We were happy to fulfill this request and completed the project in just one day!
As you can see from the image above, our products provide a nice, smooth finish. Clients often refer to our system having an “orange-peel” like texture to it. It’s softer surface and higher surface traction creates a perfect surface for our clients to walk on barefoot. We’ve Got The Tools: Commercial Floor Grinders
Removing a Kool Deck system (or any other system for that matter) requires some elbow grease and the right hardware. Because Kool Deck and other systems are applied with an epoxy bond coat, they have to be mechanically removed. We’ve invested some serious capital into industrial floor grinders so we can remove all types of durable surfaces.
Trust us, we see these types of floor coatings all the time! In fact, we are used to removing stubborn epoxy floor coatings and have done it on dozens of occasions. You might say that removing low quality floor coatings and replacing them with our high quality industrial floor coating is a specialty of ours!
Our Installation Process: Remove, Repair, Clean & Install
So, first things first – we utilize our commercial floor grinder to evenly remove the existing floor coating. We grind the floors evenly until we get down to a fresh layer of concrete – which is what our polyurea basecoat adheres to.
After the floor is ground down to a fresh layer of concrete we then look for defects and begin the repair process. Utilizing our CR Mender Repair System, we can fill and repair a wide array of cracks, pits and joints. Our CR Mender helps to create a smooth surface for our products to adhere to. It’s also the perfect time for us to repair your concrete and spot treat areas where failures may appear.
Thirdly, once we’ve repaired the concrete with the CR Mender, we can then clean the surface and apply our Polyurea Basecoat. This polyurea basecoat is highly durable and adheres to the fresh concrete – creating a solid bond coat. From here we distribute our Vinyl Chip Flakes and seal our finished product with our Polyurea Top Coat.
