Texas – The Perfect Environment for Crack Formation
Like most garage floors, this particular job site didn’t have any type of protective coating on the floor surface. Just exposed concrete. This is builder grade material and if you go out to purchase a home today, you’re 99% likely to wind up with this type of surface in your garage. Additionally, if you’ve owned a home previously, you familiar with floor stains and how easy they are to acquire. Whether it’s an oil leak from your car, a spilled can of paint, some dirty tools or just wear and tear over time – exposed concrete floors don’t hold up well over time.
In addition, you’ve always got to add in the factor of slight ground movement. Texas is the best state in America (nobody is arguing that) but we have some HOT summers and COLD winters. All of this variation in our ambient air temperature causes the soils beneath our homes to expand and contract.
These changes in air temperature drive expansion and contraction beneath the slabs of our home. Compound this with periods of dryness or wetness (due to heavy Spring rains) and you’ve got an environment that is perfect for concrete crack formations. This garage was no exception and our client had lots of hairline cracks spreading the surface of their garage floor. Luckily, we’ve got the perfect treatment option for floors with cracks so we performed some crack repair and treatment prior to moving forward with our installation.
Crack Repair & Surface Treatment
In order for us to patch and smooth our this concrete surface, we applied our CR Mender – developed by Penntek Coatings. This product works exceptionally well for filling in a wide array of crack sizes to create a smooth surface finish. It works by filling the voids left from cracks to create a surface that is two-times stronger than standard concrete. Once applied, we putty knife the finish to create a smooth layer with unnoticeable deviation from our concrete surface to the CR Mender product.
Our 1 Day Coatings applicators want our product to last for years to come: 15-years (Residential) & 5-years (Commercials) to be exact. That’s the timeframe for our exceptional warranty and we stand behind our products throughout the lifetime of your warranty policy with us! In order for our applications to hold up for these durations of time, we thoroughly inspect your concrete surfaces for imperfections to perform all types of repairs prior to applying our 1 Day Coatings products!
This is our way of insuring our client satisfaction and the optimal performance of our Polyurea floor coatings. By thoroughly evaluating the concrete surface, we identify and patch all of the existing cracks – providing our crews with a stronger and more durable surface than what was previously there.
Applying The Pecan Color
At 1 Day Coatings, we have a strong lineup of pre-assorted color selections that you can view on our Chip Color page! We have lots of clients who love the color selections that we already have picked up. Of course, you always have the option of customizing your color blend. After all, we are working with Vinyl Chip Flakes and there are literally hundreds of vinyl chip flake colors to choose from. But for this installation, our client was happy to go with the Pecan color chip, as seen on our images.
In order to prepare our concrete surfaces for the application of our Vinyl Chip Flakes, we first follow these steps:
Mechanically Grind the concrete surface to expose a fresh layer of concrete
Vacuum and remove all dust and debris
Identify & Treat all Surface Cracks with CR Mender or CR Patch & Coat
Apply Polyurea Base Coat across entire concrete surface
These steps sound simple, and they certainly are. However, the trick comes to the level of detail that we perform for each installation.
As you might image, our Polyurea Floor Coatings “adhere” to your concrete surface. In order for us to create the optimal level of adhesion, we have to first properly “prep” our concrete surface and remove all forms of dust, debris and repair the surface. Once “prepped” our teams apply our Polyurea Basecoat to create our first layer of adhesion to the concrete surface. From here, we broadcast our Chip Flake Selections across the fresh Polyurea Basecoat to create our color blend.

1 Day Coatings is hard at work again! We recently completed the installation of our Vinyl Chip System on a stunning multi-port garage in Fort Worth TX. This garage was quite large and required some patchwork prior to installing our Polyurea Basecoat.

Repairing, Patching & Cleaning the Old Concrete
Alas, let’s get started on our discussion of this gorgeous multi-port garage in Fort Worth TX! As we previously stated, this was a very large area that required some patchwork prior to the cleaning/prepping stage for our 1 Day Coatings installation. As you can see from the image above, this floor had some uneven spots, minor cracking and rough edges.
In order to make our floors “workable” and ready to adhere to our Polyurea Basecoat, we have to smooth out the concrete surface, clean and grind it down. The purpose of all of this effort is to create a fresh & exposed layer of concrete that has a higher adhesion rate for our Polyurea Basecoat to essentially “glue” itself to. Everything is paramount on our ability to create this adhesion which is why we always spend so much time talking about this step.
There are many floor coating companies out there that do not perform this type of “prep” work during their installations. Therefore, we advise all of our customers to think twice about their purchase of another flooring system other than 1 Day Coatings. We spend the necessary time to ensure that our Industrial Floor Coating Systems are installed properly. Our industry approved method ensures that we can supply a 15-year product warranty for our residential customers!
Vacuuming & Exposing Our Concrete Floor
After we’ve smoothed out our surface and patched our concrete we are ready for grinding & vacuuming our floors. Comparing our first image to the second, it’s a complete night and day difference! We are very diligent about repairing the old concrete, whether it be a fresh concrete patch or utilizing our CR Mender.
Lastly, we vacuum our floors to remove all dust or any debris that might prevent the adhesion of our Polyurea Basecoat layer. In essence, we want a “sterile” environment to install our flooring system.

Our Premier Industrial Floor Coating: Abilities & Overview of Installation
If you’re new to 1 Day Coatings, this is a great time to inform you of all that we are able to repair, renovate and install with our commercial grade flooring system.
Our premier industrial flooring system consists of a proprietary polyurea floor compound that can adhere to any surface to give it a smooth “orange peel like” texture. Our system is backed by a 15-year residential warranty and a 5-year commercial warranty. In addition, our product can stand up tough against: oil spills, abrasions, sudden impacts, water and much more
If you took a moment to read our aforementioned article (link above) then you noticed we place a lot of emphasis on “grinding down the floors to create a smooth concrete surface.” This is a paramount part of our installation process and it has multiple purposes.
For instance, on this particular job we needed to remove the original & failing epoxy floor system. Using our floor grinder, we removed the epoxy flooring to expose the concrete surface below. This fresh exposure of new concrete gives us a clean surface for our Polyurea Basecoat to adhere to. Our Polyurea Basecoat acts as our “glue” holding our Vinyl Chip System to your concrete floor and is the key ingredient that makes our surface so tough for the long run.
Filled in The Cracks & Joint Lines
In addition to exposing the concrete surface, we also take the time to fill in our cracks with our CR Mender (crack repair) system. This mender creates a smooth surface by filling in our surface cracks so that our 1 Day Coatings product can sit smoothly on the surface.
Secondly, and with permission from our clients, we can fill in your joint lines (many garages have them) to create our smooth finish. Some home owners prefer to keep these joint lines and that’s okay. We just offer this as an added benefit to our clients if they so choose.
Smoothing Out The Edges
Lastly, our team can grind out, fill in or chisel rough concrete patches that may exist along your concrete surface. We repair these rough areas to create the smooth flooring system that we are so famous for. Therefore, if you have some rough patches in your garage, warehouse, kitchen or any other area – please let us know so we can identify how best to repair these areas. This is an important step in our installation process and you’ll be glad that we took the time necessary to address these issues of concern.

We commonly install our 1 Day Coatings Vinyl Chip System on garage floors. In fact, this is one of the most common environments for us to install our revolutionary product. The reason being: our product can stand up tough against oil spills, abrasions, sudden impacts, water and much more. In fact, we back all of our residential installations with a solid 15-year product warranty!
Fixing a Previous Flooring System
The reason we received the call from our client was due to a failing epoxy flooring in this garage space. As you can see from our images, this floor has experienced some cracking and needing a stronger product to hold up in this environment. Therefore, our client decided to contract our team to remove the old epoxy flooring and install our premier 1 Day Coatings system!
Here you can see our shop vac that we use to vacuum any loose debris. This is a crucial step that we complete prior to installing our Polyurea Base Coat!
Grinding The Floors to Create a Smooth Finish
The first step before we begin any 1 Day Coating installation is to always prep our work space for our crews. This entails cleaning our floors by grinding our floors, sweeping and vacuuming up any lose debris. We spend the proper amount of time necessary completing this process so that our Polyurea Basecoat can properly adhere to our concrete surface.
We utilize our Polyurea Repair System (CR Mender) to repair cracks throughout our concrete top layer. This helps to mend our concrete system prior to laying our base coat. It helps to strengthen the concrete and extend the life of our Vinyl Chip System.
CR Mending: Fixing Floor The Floor Cracks
Secondly, in order for us to create a stable environment to install our Vinyl Chip System, we need to fill and mend the cracks in our existing concrete base. Therefore, once the concrete has been properly “ground” down to expose a fresh layer, we can fill these cracks before applying our base coat.
To complete this task, we utilize our CR Mender – which can be applied to nearly any concrete surface. This product is brilliant because it allows our crews to mend any concrete surface with a self-leveling repair system. This CR Mender has a rapid cure time that mends the top-layer of the crack with a rapid-curing “polyurea crack and spall repair material.” As stated from Penntek Coatings website (below):

Beautiful “Cordwood” Color Selection
What would any of our beautiful flooring installations be without pictures? As you can see from these images, we installed our Vinyl Chip System from front to back of this garage floor. Our client selected the Cordwood Color option which has a nice combination of tans, browns and grays.
The beauty of our Vinyl Color Chip options is their resiliency to erosion over time. Of course, it’s impossible to prevent loss or fading of color in any material in nature (due to fading pigmentation from UV light). However, our product is very resilient to tough environments and will look beautiful for years to come!
